Palin's best chance to be President

One person's opinion.

Most people seem to agree that Gov Palin was placed on the Republican ticket to energize the base and garner support from Sen Clinton's disenfranchised base. While this happened with the base and a few Clinton supporters it is becoming apparent that she is not an integral part of the ticket. This was brought into clear focus this morning when she found out about the decision to abandon Michigan in the newspaper.

If she wants to maintain her maverick status and show real courage, now would be the time to step down. She showed in the debate that she can stand the heat, her supporters are happy, but polls are showing most independents still don't think she has what it takes. Whether we like it or not, the independents decide presidential elections.

National polls show Obama ahead, in both numbers and electoral votes. If Obama wins staying on the ticket poses no problem. If McCain wins the election she will never be elected president.

IMO whoever wins this election can not fix the economy in four years. That said, whoever wins will not get reelected, if she is on the ticket now she will be blamed for not fixing the problem, presidential aspirations over. By stepping down she leaves her options open, and by spending the next four years studying the national scene and foreign policy when election time comes around she will be ready.

Roger: For Palin to step down now would only put the coup de grace on McCain's campaign.

Ask George McGovern how well it worked for him when he dropped Eagleton and added Sargent Shriver. Before he did this, at least the polls were reasonably close. On Election Day, McGovern didn't even win his home state, and lost in a landslide.

The basic problem with the McCain campaign isn't Palin. It's his inflexible message and his stubborness to continue the '01 and '03 Bush tax cuts, as well as the Iraqi war. Both these things a majority of American voters no longer support.

Robert

You are right about the coup de grace, but if McCain does win, and the economy doesn't rebound, we end up in another war, then McCain/Palin get the blame.  If that happens her asperiations for president are over.

I don't think Plain is a problem for the ticket either, I just think for her politicial future she should step down.
